March 26

Other players became engaged in the hostilities when Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy skated out of his net to defend his teammate; he was intercepted by Red Wing forwardBrendan Shanahan, who was skating at full speed, with an open ice body check, sending him sprawling momentarily. While Shanahan and Colorado defenseman Adam Foote fought, Wings goalie Mike Vernon went out to center ice to meet Roy. Vernon, despite being three inches shorter and fifteen pounds lighter than Roy, sent him to the bench with a cut on his right eyebrow

And then on April 1, 1998, Joe Louis Arena was the site of another Avs-Wings brawl. This time Patrick Roy challenged and then squared off with Chris Osgood at center ice. The results of the fight remain widely contested, with Roy landing a flurry of punches, and Osgood throwing the heavier Roy to the ice

March 23, 2002 broke into a brawl (much smaller than the previous two) after Patrick Roy was run and Red Wing agitator Sean Avery started to fight the nearest Avalanche player. The brawl continued when Red Wing goalie Dominik Hašek skated down the length of the ice to confront Roy but tripped on a discarded stick, causing him to crash into and knock over Roy. Infuriated, Roy threw off his gloves and mask to fight as Hasek did the same, but the two were restrained by referees, thus preventing Roy from fighting a third Red Wing goalie since 1997.

On January 19, 2007, Saguenay Police investigated an incident involving Roy and co-owner of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, Pierre Cardinal. There were reports that Roy threw punches at the co-owner after he intervened in order to disperse a crowd of hockey fans that were blocking the Remparts bus after a game between the two clubs. A complaint for assault had been filed against Roy who may face assault charges in the matter. Montreal newspaper Le Journal de Montréal reported that Roy later apologized to the victim by telephone.[13][14]

On March 22, 2008, in Chicoutimi, Quebec, Roy was involved in another on-ice incident during Game 2 of a first-round playoff series against the rival Saguenéens. Late in the second period, in which the Saguenéens were leading Quebec 7-1, a brawl started and Remparts goaltender Jonathan Roy, who is also Patrick’s son, charged towards opposing goaltender Bobby Nadeau. Roy hit Nadeau numerous times despite the other goalie indicating he didn’t want to fight. After knocking Nadeau down, Roy continued to hit him. Roy fought a second Saguenéens player, then skated off the ice while holding both middle fingers up to the crowd. Coach Roy denied inciting his son to fight even though cameras showed Roy making a gesture towards his son while he was advancing towards Nadeau. After investigation by the league office, Jonathan was suspended for seven games and fined $500 while Patrick was suspended for five games and fined $4,000. The Quebec Ministry of Public Safety has launched a police investigation into the matter.[18][19][20] In late July 2008, Jonathan was charged with assault in Saguenay courts.[21]

On November 21, 2008, Roy’s other son found trouble playing for the Remparts, when centre Frederick Roy cross-checked an opponent in the head after a stoppage in play, Frederick was ultimately suspended 15 games by the QMJHL for that incident, which occurred the night before Patrick Roy’s jersey retirement ceremony in Montreal.[22]

Or that the three teams that have acquired the most picks since 1997 – the year the Wings began a run of four Cups over a decade – are perennial playoff outsiders: the L.A. Kings (12), Chicago Blackhawks (12), Florida Panthers (9) and Phoenix Coyotes (9).

1999March 23 -Detroit acquired defenseman Ulf Samuelsson from the NY Rangers for Detroit’s 2nd-round pick in the 1999 Entry Draft (Rangers selected center David Inman) and 3rd-round pick in the 1999 Entry Draft (Rangers selected goaltender Johan Asplund).

27- Washington traded Robert Lang to Detroit for Tomas Fleischmann, a 1st round pick in 2004 (Mike Green) and a 4th round pick in 2006 (Luke Lynes).

Of the next eight Leafs’ goalies, who played the most games in a Toronto uniform, which were drafted by the Leafs – and which did they have to trade for?

John Ross Roach played 222 games from 1922 until 1928, four decades before the draft was introduced. And Bruce Gamble came before the draft and Gord McRae was a Leafs’ free agent signing.

The remaining five are: Felix Potvin, Allan Bester, Ken Wregget, Jeff Reese and Mike Palmateer and all were drafted by the Leafs from 1974 until 1990 and from the 2nd to the 5th rounds.

A group of 26 investors, led by a Mr. Charles Hughes purchased the Cougars, and moved them to a new franchise in the mid-West.

The Cougars lost to Boston, and went on to a pathetic 12-28-4 season’s record.

Things would improve, however, when league icon Jack Adams took over the following season, and they moved into their new Detroit Olympia.

The Cougars became the Detroit Falcons a few years later, and when James Norris purchased the team in the early ’30s, he renamed them a second time.

The Red Wings were named after the winged wheel insignia of Norris’s old Montreal Athletic Association hockey team.
